Tall, Dark and Divine / Eros
by Jenna Bennett
2012
Eros, the god of love, is used to pushing other people toward romance, until he meets a woman who won’t play along. In this myth-tinged contemporary romance, attraction and free will collide, and even a god has to earn trust.
Series background & context
Tall Dark & Divine is Jenna Bennett’s playful take on contemporary romance with a mythological twist. It drops Greek gods into the modern world and then asks the obvious question: what happens when beings built for destiny have to deal with human mess, mixed signals, and very inconvenient feelings? The result is romance with a wink, where mythology shows up in character and attitude as much as in supernatural powers.
The series starts with Tall, Dark and Divine, where love isn’t just an emotion, it’s someone’s job. Eros, the god of love, is used to nudging mortals together and calling it fate. He’s charming, confident, and completely unused to hearing the word “no.” But when he meets Annie Landon, a woman with her own ideas about romance and control, the usual script doesn’t work the way he expects.
Immortality does not make dating easier.
A big part of the fun here is the collision between divine certainty and everyday reality. Eros may understand attraction, but he doesn’t automatically understand boundaries, trust, or what it means to earn someone’s respect. Annie, meanwhile, isn’t looking for a god to fix her life, she’s trying to make her own choices, even when temptation is literally supernatural.
Rather than leaning hard on epic battles or heavy mythology homework, these stories focus on the romcom pleasures: chemistry, banter, mistaken assumptions, and the slow shift from “this is a bad idea” to “I can’t stop thinking about you.” The myth elements add flavor, immortal egos, divine rules, and the occasional reminder that the people pulling strings also have bruised hearts. Other gods can drift through the edges of the story, adding complications the way a meddling friend might, except with more power and worse impulse control.
Expect plenty of flirting, a little magic, and a lot of heart.
If you’re in the mood for a romance that’s light, modern, and a little magical, this series fits. It’s more about falling in love than saving the world, with just enough mythology to make the setup feel fresh, and it’s a good pick if you like myth-inspired stories that don’t take themselves too seriously. The fantasy elements stay light, so the focus stays on the couple. Start with Tall, Dark and Divine to meet Eros and Annie, then follow the divine dating chaos from there.
