Series background & context

Tales of a New World shifts P. C. Cast’s fascination with goddesses and chosen ones into a far‑future Earth reshaped by catastrophe. Long after a disaster shattered the old world, the land is scarred by deadly blights and oversized predators, and human survivors have splintered into distinct clans with their own magicks, rituals, and prejudices.

The series opens with Moon Chosen. Mari is an Earth Walker, heir to the role of Moon Woman in her matriarchal clan. Her people live in the shadowed forest, drawing down moonlight to heal sickness and ease minds, but the same blessing that soothes them also leaves them vulnerable to a creeping, fungal Affliction if they are not regularly cleansed. Mari hides a secret, though: she is half Companion, the sun‑aligned people who live in towering city‑trees and bond with specially bred dogs.

Nik, the other central character, is a son of the Companion leader and expected to become Sun Priest, but he has never been chosen by a canine ally and chafes under his father’s rigid rule. When a brutal attack by mutated Skin Stealers destroys Mari’s village and threatens Nik’s home, their paths cross. Together with their animal Companions, they begin to imagine an alliance that could bridge generations of fear between their peoples.

Sun Warrior and Wind Rider push that idea further. Thaddeus, a charismatic zealot from within the Companions, allies himself with a newly awakened god of Death and turns religious fervor into a weapon. Mari, Nik, and their growing Pack are forced to leave the City in the Trees and trek toward the plains, hoping the legendary Wind Riders—a culture built around bonds with powerful horses—will join them against the rising darkness.

Throughout the series, Cast leans into big, almost mythic imagery: moons and suns in balance, goddesses of Life and Death, and animal partners who are more than pets. At the same time, she keeps the focus on intimate questions. Can people raised to fear and hate each other truly change? How do you carry grief and trauma without letting it define you? What kind of world do you build when the old one has literally fallen apart?

Tales of a New World is for readers who like their fantasy expansive and emotional, with detailed cultures, strong bonds between humans and animals, and a slow‑building fight against a villain who believes the world must be broken to be remade.
