You Look Like Death

by Gerard Way

2021

Kicked out of the Umbrella Academy and cut off from his allowance, a teenage Klaus heads to Hollywood looking for a fresh start. Instead he falls in with a fading movie star and a vampire drug lord, spiraling into addiction and dangerous bargains.

Series background & context

Tales from the Umbrella Academy is the umbrella banner for spin-off stories set in the same strange universe as the core series. Instead of following every member of the Hargreeves family at once, these books zoom in on side characters and odd corners of the world that only get a few panels in the main run. The tone is still offbeat and darkly funny, but the scale is tighter and more personal.

Each project under this heading is self-contained, so you can pick one up without having every plot twist from Apocalypse Suite, Dallas, or Hotel Oblivion memorized. Some entries are one‑shot specials, others are short miniseries. What ties them together is that “Tales from the Umbrella Academy” line above the logo and a focus on a single focal character or duo rather than the whole dysfunctional family.

One of the earliest examples is the Christmas one‑shot about Hazel and Cha‑Cha, the candy-colored time‑traveling assassins first introduced in Dallas. Their story sends the pair on a mission to stop a rogue time agent during the holidays, mixing brutal slapstick violence with a genuinely oddball attempt to “save” Christmas. It feels like an extended riff on their brief, chaotic role in the main series, giving them a little more room to breathe without softening how dangerous they are.

The most substantial spin-off so far is You Look Like Death, a six‑issue miniseries that follows Klaus, a.k.a. the Séance, after he gets kicked out of the Academy as a teenager. Cut off from his allowance and desperate for attention, he heads to Hollywood, falls in with a washed‑up actress, and crosses a vampire crime boss whose drugs give him the worst possible high. The book leans into addiction, exploitation, and found family while still delivering the absurd visual gags Umbrella readers expect.

Because these stories sit slightly to the side of the main plot, they’re a good place for the creative team to play. Different artists bring their own textures and pacing, and the scripts can experiment with holiday specials, heist plots, or character studies without worrying about the next world-ending apocalypse. For readers, that means you can pick the character you’re most curious about—Klaus, Hazel and Cha‑Cha, or whoever comes next—and dive in.

In terms of reading order, most fans tackle Tales entries after they’ve at least finished the first two Umbrella Academy volumes. That way the emotional beats land: you already know how Klaus behaves around his siblings, or what Hazel and Cha‑Cha did in Dallas, before you see them in the spotlight. But nothing here is homework. Tales from the Umbrella Academy is more like bonus footage—stranger, looser, and full of details that deepen the main story without ever feeling essential to follow it.
