Author bio
Tad Williams grew up in California reading both fantasy and science fiction, and he never quite picked one over the other. Today he is best known for huge, immersive stories like Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Otherland, and the later Last King of Osten Ard books.
He was born in San Jose in 1957 and raised in nearby Palo Alto, in a close family that encouraged drawing, music, and offbeat ideas.
Before anyone paid him to write, Williams cycled through an almost comic list of jobs. He delivered newspapers, sold shoes, managed a branch of a financial company, worked in food service, and spent nights as a DJ and music director at a college radio station.
He also wrote and acted for a Bay Area theater company, helped out on television and radio projects, and drew diagrams and manuals for the military. A stint at Apple introduced him to early multimedia and interactive technology, work that later fed directly into the virtual reality landscapes of Otherland.
In his mid twenties he decided to try a novel about cats and mythology, and sent Tailchaser's Song to a publisher with a bold cover letter and a made up story about a lost manuscript. The gamble paid off: the book appeared in 1985 and has stayed in print, introducing readers to his mix of folklore, emotional stakes, and detailed invented worlds.
His breakthrough came with the epic Osten Ard trilogy starting with The Dragonbone Chair, where kitchen boy Simon is dragged into a war between mortal kingdoms and ancient Sithi powers. The success of that series let Williams make writing his full time job, and decades later he returned to the same setting in The Heart of What Was Lost, Brothers of the Wind, and the sprawling Last King of Osten Ard novels.
Williams followed the classic fantasy of Osten Ard with the science fictional Otherland books, set in a near future internet built out as full body virtual reality. Those novels show his love of mixing genres: the cast wanders from storybook worlds to science fiction battlefields, detective puzzles, and surreal dreamscapes, all tied together by a conspiracy among the very rich.
He has never stayed in one lane for long. Shadowmarch returns to high fantasy on the edge of a magical border, The War of the Flowers drops a failed musician into a dangerous modern Faerie, and the Bobby Dollar novels follow a hard drinking angel who works as an advocate for the dead in a kind of supernatural legal thriller.
Alongside the big series, Williams writes short fiction and comics, collects older work in volumes like Rite and A Stark and Wormy Knight, and experiments with side stories set in his existing worlds. He also collaborates with his wife, writer and editor Deborah Beale, on The Ordinary Farm Adventures, middle grade novels about a secret farm full of dragons, unicorns, and time displaced workers.
Williams and Beale live in Northern California with their children and an ever changing population of pets.
