Sweetly Contemporary Books in Order

The Sweetly Contemporary books show a softer, more relaxed side of Jennifer Blake. This is not the shelf for royal intrigue, duels at dawn, or sprawling Louisiana history. There is plenty of spark, and sometimes a little melodrama, but the overall effect is gentler than in her darker work.

The settings help with that feeling. Water, travel, seasonal weather, and Southern locations show up often. The books like movement, whether that means a trip by sea, a snowbound pause, or a trip into Louisiana bayou country. Blake uses those settings to create intimacy. Once the characters are cut off from ordinary distractions, they have to deal with each other.

These romances also tend to be very accessible. You do not need a map of family connections or a deep knowledge of history to enjoy them. The emphasis is on the couple, the misunderstanding or obstacle between them, and the satisfaction of seeing affection turn into commitment.

For readers who want Blake's sense of place and chemistry without the heavier historical machinery, this collection makes a nice starting point. It is especially good if you enjoy older category-style romances that still give the leads some bite.

The title says it well. These books are sweet, but not weak. The characters still argue, misread one another, and get themselves into romantic trouble. Blake just lets a little more sunlight into the room.
