Series background & context

Love and Adventure is exactly what it sounds like, a Jennifer Blake collection for readers who want motion, danger, and romance working side by side. These books are historical, but they are not quiet. The characters get carried into storms, schemes, journeys, and social disasters that leave very little room for calm courtship.

The lineup says a lot: The Storm and the Splendor, Love's Wild Desire, Surrender in Moonlight, The Notorious Angel, and Golden Fancy.

What links these stories is not one recurring family or one consistent setting. It is tempo. Blake gives the couples something urgent to deal with from the start, revenge, forced proximity, dangerous travel, compromised reputation, a flight from unwanted marriage, or a collision with the wrong man at exactly the wrong time. The love story grows while the characters are already in motion.

That makes this collection a good showcase for one of Blake's real strengths. She likes proud heroines and forceful heroes, but she likes them even more when outside pressure strips away politeness. Adventure does that. A storm, a pursuit, a frontier crossing, or a public scandal forces people to reveal themselves quickly. Under those conditions, attraction feels sharper and resentment can turn into dependence before either side is ready.

The settings shift, but the emotional experience is consistent. Expect strong atmosphere, quick turns in fortune, and romances that feel physical, not only in sensual terms but in the sense that the characters are always moving through real terrain and real peril.

If you want the Blake books that feel most like sweeping old-school romantic adventure, this collection is a natural place to go. It catches the side of her work that enjoys broad gesture, large feeling, and the idea that love often arrives while everything else is going gloriously wrong.

That combination suits her very well.
