Author bio
Susan Hatler writes the kind of books that are easy to sink into, sweet contemporary romances, cozy holiday love stories, and a few young adult novels with a little extra twist. Her work has been translated into German, Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese, which fits the broad appeal of stories built around humor, hope, and people trying to figure out what comes next.
Writing did not arrive late for her. It seems to have been there from the start. As a kid she loved making up stories, and she kept at it through school, writing, daydreaming, and filling journals even while regular life kept pulling at her from other directions.
She studied philosophy, with a minor in political science, at California State University Hayward. After college, she worked in the legal and insurance fields, and that practical side of life still shows up in her fiction. A lot of her heroines are organized, ambitious, overworked, or trying very hard to make sensible decisions before love barges in and ruins the spreadsheet.
Eventually, writing stopped being the side road and became the main job. That shift makes a lot of sense when you look at her catalog. She has built whole clusters of connected romances, from the dating mishaps of Love at First Date and the rest of the Better Date Than Never books, to wedding-centered stories like The Wedding Charm, to coastal and holiday settings in The Second Chance Inn and A Sugar Plum Christmas.
She likes people at crossroads.
That is really the engine behind most Susan Hatler stories. Her characters are often starting over, leaving bad relationships, taking a chance on a new town, opening a business, stepping into an unexpected job, or finally admitting they want something different from the life they planned. Some books stay in city settings full of work stress, blind dates, and strong friendships. Others head to places like Blue Moon Bay or Christmas Mountain, where small-town life, local traditions, and familiar faces matter just as much as the romance.
Her young adult books keep that same hopeful streak, even when the setup changes. In Shaken, a high school girl suddenly gains the ability to read minds and gets pulled into a mystery. In The Crush Dilemma, a teen hides behind an advice-column persona and has to decide whether she is brave enough to be honest as herself. Even in the paranormal or teen stories, Hatler keeps the focus on identity, trust, and emotional risk.
Her official bio describes her as a born optimist, and that feels exactly right. These are not cynical books. They are warm, quick-moving, and full of characters who worry, fumble, and overthink, but usually find their way to something kinder on the other side.
Readers who like clean romance, strong friend groups, a little banter, and endings that feel earned will probably feel at home here. Hatler keeps returning to second chances, fresh starts, and the idea that love can show up in very inconvenient places, which, for romance readers, is usually the fun part.
