The Supernaturals

by David Lynn Golemon

2011

Seven years after a disastrous investigation ruined his career, Professor Gabriel Kennedy is lured back to Summer Place, a sprawling mansion in the Pocono Mountains with a vicious reputation. A reality TV crew wants a live Halloween special, but Kennedy's new team of ghost hunters soon discovers that the house itself is hungry for them.

Series background & context

The Supernaturals series shifts Golemon's eye for secret histories from military bunkers to haunted rooms. Instead of soldiers and submarines, these books follow Professor Gabriel Kennedy and a team of scientists, sensitives, and skeptics who investigate places where something is badly wrong.

The first novel, The Supernaturals, is a big haunted house story with a modern twist. Years before the book opens, Kennedy led an investigation at Summer Place, a grand old mansion in the Pocono Mountains that had a reputation for chewing up anyone who tried to live there. The inquiry ended in tragedy, his career collapsed, and he walked away from the field.

When the story proper begins, a television producer sees ratings gold in the legend of Summer Place and wants to bring a live ghost hunting special to the property. She needs Kennedy as both on air expert and lightning rod, and she is willing to dig up his past to get him. Reluctantly he assembles a small crew nicknamed the Supernaturals, each member bringing a different tool, sense, or scar to the job.

Summer Place is not content to be a backdrop. The house itself feels aware, patient, and predatory. The team faces old school haunted house chills, but filtered through modern equipment, streaming feeds, and the pressure of performing for an audience that assumes everything is faked. That tension between spectacle and genuine terror is part of what gives the series its bite.

The second book, In the Still of the Night, moves the action to Moreno, a near abandoned town in California that turns out to be tied to the President's childhood. The Supernaturals are called back together after being publicly accused of faking their earlier work. In Moreno they find a presence that lives beneath an old movie theater and drags victims back to Halloween night in 1963, blurring time as easily as it warps space.

Across both books, the tone stays closer to horror than to adventure, but the same love of detail is there. Kennedy's group approaches each case with cameras, traps, and theories, only to realize that their equipment is always a step behind whatever intelligence they are facing. The stories linger on the emotional fallout too, especially the guilt and fear that come from losing people in situations no one will ever fully believe.

If the Event Group novels ask what would happen if every legend hid technology, the Supernaturals series asks what it would cost to prove that malevolent spirits are real. Readers can expect creaking floors, bad dreams, and a found family of ghost hunters who are brave enough to go back into the dark even after the cameras are gone.
