A Bad Day for Sunshine

by Darynda Jones

2020

Her first big case, a missing fifteen year old girl, drags up her own kidnapping and throws her straight into the town’s darkest secrets.

Series background & context

The Sunshine Vicram books take Darynda Jones’s trademark humor and drop it into a small mountain town that calls itself the Psych Ward. Sunshine grew up in Del Sol, New Mexico, but fled after being kidnapped as a teenager and held for several days. Years later she is a single mom and a capable cop in Santa Fe when her parents quietly enter her in the sheriff’s race back home and she wins without even knowing she was on the ballot.

In A Bad Day for Sunshine she returns to Del Sol with her teenage daughter Auri, expecting sleepy shifts and the occasional streaking local. Instead she is handed a missing girl case that echoes her own abduction, a kidnapped rooster, and a townful of eccentrics with opinions about everything from speed limits to coffee strength. Sunshine’s unresolved feelings for Levi Ravinder, the smart, quietly dangerous black sheep of a local crime family, complicate every step of the investigation.

A Good Day for Chardonnay raises both the emotional and procedural stakes. A bar fight leaves Levi badly hurt and connects to an old unsolved case involving a missing boy. At the same time Auri, who has inherited her mother’s curiosity and stubborn streak, launches her own investigation into a woman she is convinced is a serial killer. Sunshine juggles the official case files with her daughter’s increasingly risky sleuthing and the slowly surfacing memories of what really happened to her at seventeen.

In A Hard Day for a Hangover, the final book in the trilogy, a string of missing women pulls Sunshine into conflicts that touch nearly every powerful family in Del Sol, including the Ravinders. Auri is determined to prove herself as an investigator and keeps slipping into danger, even as Sunshine tries to protect her from both criminals and painful truths. Long running mysteries about Sunshine’s past and her connection to Levi finally come into focus against a backdrop of murders, snipers, and even a deeply inconvenient raccoon.

Despite the body count, the Sunshine Vicram books stay warm and funny. Each novel braids together twisty whodunits with sharp-edged family banter, oddball townsfolk, and a slow burn, second chance romance. The heart of the series is the relationship between Sunshine and Auri as they argue, miscommunicate, and keep choosing each other, even while both chase answers to questions that have defined their lives.

Readers can technically dip in anywhere, since each book centers on its own major case, but the emotional payoffs land best in order. Taken together, the trilogy charts Sunshine’s journey from reluctant sheriff with a carefully buried trauma to a woman who owns both her past and her future, calling Del Sol home on her own terms.
