These books do not separate the case from Sunny's life. Richie Burke, her ex-husband with mob connections, is never far from the action. Neither are people like Spike, Rosie, Tony Marcus, and the larger Parker crowd circling Boston. By the time you get into Blood Feud, Grudge Match, Payback, and Revenge Tour, Sunny is often protecting friends, old flames, or family while also trying to keep a professional grip on the facts.

That is when the trouble really starts.

Lupica's version of Sunny lives in the overlap between loyalty and suspicion. She can like somebody and still wonder if they are lying. She can help a friend and still keep one eye on the exit. The cases tend to involve blackmail, gangsters, bad money, missing people, and secrets that have been festering for years. But the books are less about elaborate twists than about pressure, who folds, who talks, and who decides to make a mess even bigger.

Boston matters here, too. Not in a postcard way. In a neighborhood, restaurant, side-street, know-who-you-know kind of way. Sunny moves through the city like somebody who understands its class lines, grudges, and shortcuts, and that helps the series feel grounded even when the stakes jump.

If you like private-eye novels where the detective's personal history keeps complicating the work, this is a good run. Start with Blood Feud for Lupica's first full shot at Sunny, then read forward. The books are quick, sharp, and best when Sunny has to choose between what is smart, what is fair, and what she cannot quite bring herself to walk away from.
