Series background & context
Storm Dragons Saga is a high-adventure fantasy series co-written by Julie Kagawa and J.T. Nicholas. It takes place in a sky-world of floating islands suspended above a raging Maelstrom, where storms are more than weather, they’re a force that shapes politics, travel, and survival. Islands have their own cultures and grudges, and travel means reading the storm currents and hoping your ship holds together.
The story begins with Remy, a scrappy kid from one of the poorer islands, always one bad day away from starving. When he crosses paths with Princess Gem, a young mage with responsibilities she never wanted, he gets pulled into a problem far bigger than a single island. Remy’s life changes for good when he bonds with a baby storm dragon named Storm, a creature that should not exist, and certainly should not exist in the hands of a nobody.
Dragons are rare, powerful, and dangerous, and in this world the idea of a “true dragon” is wrapped up in myth and fear. As islands begin to sink and the Maelstrom grows more violent, Remy and Gem are forced into a race to find answers and allies before their world literally falls out of the sky.
In this world, the sky can kill you.
They’re also being hunted. A pirate mage named Jhaeros wants dragon power for himself, and he’s willing to burn through islands and people to get it. That sets up the series’ ongoing tension: Remy and Gem are trying to do the right thing while learning what their magic can do, and Jhaeros keeps proving that power without restraint is terrifying.
Expect big set pieces, airships, storms, sea monsters in the clouds, and the kind of found-family friendship that forms when you survive something impossible together. The tone is adventurous and fast, with plenty of danger, but it keeps its focus on character choices: Remy’s fear of being disposable, Gem’s struggle to step out of royal expectations, and the bond between a kid and a dragon who are both learning what trust means. As the series continues, different kinds of dragons and different kinds of magic come into play, and the heroes learn that saving the islands may require changing the rules everyone has lived by.
For reading order, start with Lightningborn, continue with Firebred, and then Skyshattered. Each book escalates the scope, taking the characters farther across the sky-world and deeper into the secrets of dragons and storms.
