Talon

by Julie Kagawa

2014

Series background & context

The Talon series takes a familiar teen setup, summer freedom, new friends, first love, and twists it hard: the main character is a dragon in human skin. Ember Hill has been raised by the Talon organization, taught how to blend in and how to obey, and sent into the human world as part of a long-term plan to control dragonkind.

Ember’s assignment is simple on paper: spend the summer among humans, learn to act like one of them, and report back. In practice, it’s the first time she’s had choices that feel like her own. She meets Garret Xavier Sebastian, a boy who seems to understand her in ways no one in Talon ever did, and she also crosses paths with Riley, a rogue dragon who insists there’s another way to live.

Every side wants Ember, and none of them play fair.

On one side is Talon, an organization that treats dragons like assets and isn’t shy about using fear to keep them loyal. On the other is the Order of St. George, a secret group of dragon-slayers who believe extermination is the only answer. Between them are the rogues, dragons who refuse to be owned, but who are constantly hunted and forced to make brutal calls just to stay alive.

As the books go on, the conflict widens from one summer town to a full-blown shadow war. Ember learns that Talon has been shaping dragon society for generations, and that the Order has its own internal cracks and power struggles. Assassins, experiments, and shifting alliances raise the stakes, and the question stops being “Who do I trust?” and becomes “What am I willing to burn down to keep the people I love alive?”

The series’ longer arc is built around identity and loyalty: Ember’s love for her twin brother, Dante, clashes with what she learns about Talon’s methods, and her feelings for Garret grow more complicated as she learns who he really is. The books move quickly, with plenty of action, secret bases, betrayals, and narrow escapes, but they also keep returning to the same theme, freedom has a cost, and nobody gets out of a war clean.

If you like high-stakes YA with a romance thread, a secret war playing out in the open world, and main characters who have to pick a side and then live with it, Talon delivers. Read it in order starting with Talon, then Rogue, Soldier, Legion, and the finale Inferno.
