Series background & context

The Stoneybrook Mystery books follow Hadley James, a jam-maker whose life is rooted in her mountain town's year-round farmers market. She knows the vendors, the customers, the local grudges, and exactly how fast news travels once something goes wrong. That makes her a natural amateur sleuth, whether she likes it or not.

In A Crafty Crime, Hadley is newly divorced and trying to figure out what life looks like on her own terms. Then an elderly neighbor's death starts looking a lot more suspicious than natural, and Hadley gets pulled into an investigation that quickly becomes personal. That mix of everyday small-town life and sudden danger sets the pattern for the series.

Stoneybrook itself is a big part of the appeal. The town, and the wider Cascade Valley around it, are inspired by Washington's Methow Valley, so the books have a strong sense of mountain-town character. Market stalls, local businesses, seasonal events, and neighboring towns all feed into the mysteries. Trouble does not arrive from nowhere. It grows out of the same community Hadley depends on.

Hadley also has built-in ties that make every case more complicated. Her twin brother Paul is a deputy sheriff, so family and official police work keep colliding. Her best friend Suzanne is another constant, and their long history gives the stories a warm, lived-in feel. These are books where the emotional texture comes from people who have known each other for years.

The cats are not a gimmick.

Each book brings a new rescue cat into Hadley's orbit, and the series also makes room for recipes, crafting, and the practical business of market life. That homey side never cancels out the crime, but it does keep the tone welcoming. If you like classic small-town cozies where murders rattle the whole community and the sleuth has deep roots in the place she is protecting, Stoneybrook is exactly that kind of series.
