Series background & context

Stonegate Investigative Agency is Candace Havens in romantic-suspense mode, and these books move like she means it. Private investigators, dangerous clients, cold cases, international settings, and a lot of attraction under pressure all show up here.

The agency gives the series its backbone.

Because the books revolve around investigators and security professionals, each story can bring in a different couple while keeping the same overall tone. The heroines are working women with real skills, not people who have wandered into trouble by accident. The men tend to come with baggage of their own, burned-cover histories, scientific secrets, or family wounds that turn a professional assignment into something much more personal.

Take Me If You Dare opens with Mariska Stonegate meeting a man who is not what he seems, and that mix of danger and seduction sets the pace for the trilogy. She Who Dares, Wins shifts the action to London, where protection duty gets complicated fast. Truth and Dare adds a colder emotional mystery, with a decades-old death and a heroine who refuses to back away from the truth.

What links the books is the blend of competence and heat. Havens likes characters who know how to do a job, even when desire keeps making the job harder. The suspense plots are there to give shape and momentum, but the real engine is the push and pull between two people who would probably be safer if they stayed apart and clearly are not going to do that.

If you like your romance with more chase, more danger, and a little spy-movie energy, Stonegate is a good lane to try. These books are quicker and hotter than her cozies, and more grounded than her paranormal fantasy, which gives them a distinct place in her catalog.
