Series background & context

Candace Havens writes the Mercy McCarthy mysteries as Lucy Connelly, and this series is built for readers who want bookshops, village life, and murder without losing the cozy atmosphere. The setting is Shamrock Cove, a small seaside village in Ireland where community events, local gossip, and old family history keep life lively even before the bodies start turning up.

Mercy McCarthy is the heart of it.

She is an American mystery writer who comes to Ireland with her twin sister, Lizzie, after inheriting their grandfather's antique bookshop. That premise does a lot of work at once. It gives the series a built-in literary feel, plants two outsiders in a close-knit village, and makes the shop a natural meeting point for neighbors, suspects, and trouble. Their dog, Mr. Poe, adds another cozy-series pleasure, a dependable sidekick who somehow keeps ending up close to the clues.

The books make good use of local events. A literary festival, a castle weekend, a summer celebration, an autumn book club, a bakery at St. Patrick's Day, all of those settings help each mystery feel tied to Shamrock Cove rather than dropped in from somewhere else. The crimes matter, but so does the texture of the place, the food, the weather, the neighbors, and the sense that Mercy is slowly building a life there.

Because Mercy is a writer, the series also has a slightly more bookish self-awareness than some cozy lines. She notices motives, stories, and small inconsistencies. She is curious, sometimes stubborn, and not especially good at leaving a suspicious detail alone. That makes her a classic amateur sleuth, but one with a voice that fits the book-centered world around her.

If you want Irish-set cozies with a warm community, literary touches, and a heroine who keeps finding trouble in the middle of otherwise charming local events, this is a very easy series to sink into.
