Together they make space for both the puzzle and the social tension, so the stories can have the fun of a traditional whodunit while still caring about who gets listened to, who gets blamed, and who is trapped by their place in the household.

The period setting matters too. These are not just mysteries placed in old clothes. The rules of service, reputation, inheritance, and respectability all shape what characters can say and do.
