Series background & context
Stillwater Bay is one of Holmes's heaviest series, and it earns that weight. These books are set in a small community shattered by an elementary school shooting. The story is not built around the event as spectacle. It is built around what comes after, grief, blame, silence, broken friendships, and the question of whether a town can ever become itself again.
The prequel stories, Before the Storm and Stillwater Shores, show the town before everything breaks. That matters, because this is a series about ordinary lives being split into a before and an after. Five women stand at the heart of the wider story, connected by friendship, marriage, children, church, and community expectations.
Then the storm hits.
Stillwater Rising follows the aftermath most directly, especially through Jennifer Crowne, who has lost her son, and Mayor Charlotte Stone, who is trying to hold her town together while her own life starts to crack. Later books widen the lens. Stillwater Tides and its alternate edition Dreams of Stillwater sit with survivor's guilt and the slow grind of daily grief. Stillwater Deep turns harder toward buried truth, asking what happens when one person's secret touches an entire town.
These are not easy comfort reads. Holmes spends time with mothers, wives, and friends who are trying to stay functional while carrying pain that does not behave neatly. She is also interested in what communities do when tragedy forces people to choose between compassion and scapegoating.
If you like issue-driven women's fiction with multiple viewpoints, moral complexity, and a strong sense of place, Stillwater Bay is worth your time. Expect an emotional series about loss, healing, and the damage secrets do when people think silence will keep the peace.
