Steven Salvatore Books in Order

Steven Salvatore grew up in Tarrytown, New York, and has spent much of his life moving between classrooms, stories, and the kinds of pop culture obsessions that show up in his books. He studied writing and art history at Ithaca College, later earned an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School, and built a long career teaching college writing before his publishing life took off.

Writing didn't arrive as a tidy plan.

Salvatore has said he wrote as a kid, but college was the moment when it started to feel real. A children's literature writing course pulled him toward stories for young people, and the voice of YA stuck. He wrote an early novel as a sophomore, started querying agents in 2009, and then kept going through years of rejection, revision, and total rebuilds. By his own account, there were nearly three hundred rejections and several different manuscripts before the second draft of Can't Take That Away found an agent in 2019.

That patience matters because it explains the shape of his work. Salvatore's novels are full of queer teens and young adults who are still figuring themselves out. They want love, yes, but they also want language for their identities, room to mess up, and families or friends who will meet them where they are. The emotions run high, but the books stay grounded in ordinary fears, school pressure, body image, grief, and the strange bravery of being seen.

For more than a decade, Salvatore taught composition and creative writing in New York. He worked at places including Westchester Community College, SUNY Orange, and the College of New Rochelle, where he also ran the Writing Center and helped lead the freshman writing program. These days he works as an academic advisor at Manhattanville University and still teaches. He also does book coaching, which feels like a natural extension of someone who spent years helping writers get unstuck.

You can feel the teacher in the books, in a good way.

Can't Take That Away, his 2021 debut, follows Carey Parker, a genderqueer teen who loves music and fights back when school adults try to police who gets to take up space onstage. And They Lived . . . moves to a college setting and follows Chase Arthur, an animator and hopeless romantic dealing with body dysmorphia, recovery, and questions around gender identity while falling for poet Jack Reid. Readers who like emotional romance with real vulnerability usually start there and stay for the honesty.

Then came No Perfect Places, which turns toward grief, family secrets, and sibling bonds after a father's death in prison shakes a set of twins already struggling to hold together. Salvatore's range widened again with The Boyfriend Subscription, an adult fake-dating romance, and When Love Gives You Lemons, a YA second-chance love story set around an Italian wedding on the Amalfi Coast. Across all of them, he returns to messy people, big feelings, and the idea that love doesn't fix everything, but it can help people tell the truth.

Off the page, Salvatore has put a lot of energy into queer literary community. He co-founded Pride Book Fest during the pandemic, helping create a virtual space for queer authors, illustrators, and readers to find one another. He has also led workshops for young writers and LGBTQ+ communities, which fits the activist streak that runs alongside his fiction.

Now he lives in New York with his husband, works as an academic advisor at Manhattanville University, and still teaches and coaches writers. He also keeps a lively public persona, with plenty of affection for Mariah Carey, Star Wars, Italy, and his loud family. That mix of seriousness and fun feels true to the fiction too. His career didn't happen quickly, and his characters rarely get easy answers, but both keep moving toward something more honest.
