Author bio
Steven Konkoly was born in northwest Indiana, about half an hour from Chicago, and grew up in Munster. Both of his parents were high school teachers, so school mattered at home. His mother was a serious reader, and books were always close by.
That mix of discipline and imagination never really left him.
Konkoly graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993 with a bachelor of science in English literature. He then spent eight years on active duty, serving with Navy and Marine Corps units and traveling widely, including a two-year tour in Japan and work across Asia and the Middle East.
He was not learning military life from a distance. He led maritime boarding operations in the Arabian Gulf while enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq, and later worked as a Forward Air Controller with a specialized Marine unit, directing aircraft and naval gunfire. A lot of readers come to his books for exactly that reason. The action feels lived in, not borrowed.
That matters.
Writing arrived as a second career. Around 2010, during a period of family change and professional uncertainty, he decided to try the thing he could not stop thinking about, writing a novel. He chose the independent route, published early work himself, and found an audience quickly. The Jakarta Pandemic landed before pandemic thrillers became crowded, and its close-up look at suburban survival, preparedness, and family strain gave readers something that felt alarmingly plausible.
From there, he built a body of work that moves easily between post-apocalyptic fiction, espionage thrillers, and conspiracy novels. The Black Flagged books bring in covert operators, political rot, and bioweapons fear. The Perseid Collapse pushes deeper into nationwide breakdown while keeping its eyes on family and community. Later novels like The Rescue, Deep Sleep, and A Clean Kill show another side of his work, fast-moving investigations shaped by sleeper networks, deniable operations, and institutions that do not deserve the trust placed in them.
Across all of it, a few patterns keep showing up. Konkoly likes pressure-cooker situations. He likes competent people backed into ugly corners. He writes a lot about systems, how they fail, how they are manipulated, and what ordinary people do when the safety rails come off. Even when the scope gets big, the emotional center is usually personal: protect your family, figure out who is lying, survive the next twenty-four hours.
He is now a Wall Street Journal and Washington Post bestselling author with more than twenty thrillers to his name. He has said he still gets up at zero dark thirty to write, and when he is off the clock he likes being outdoors or traveling with his family and dog.
That early-morning work ethic shows.
