With help from Marnie Young, a former Marine helicopter pilot and longtime friend, plus a covert team Helen quietly assembled, Devin starts tracing evidence of a Russian sleeper network embedded inside the United States.

The threat is not limited to one agency or one bad actor. That is what makes these books feel so tense. The conspiracy reaches into government, business, defense contractors, and intelligence structures. In Coming Dawn, the story widens further as the only path to breaking the network may require taking the fight overseas. By Wide Awake, the stakes have shifted toward open internal chaos, with political killings and efforts to spark civil conflict.

The series works because Devin is not written as an all-purpose action machine. He is smart, capable, and increasingly dangerous, but he still feels like someone dragged into a world that had been operating around him in secret. Marnie helps give the books lift, not just because she is effective, but because she keeps the story grounded in trust and partnership.

Tone matters here. These books are conspiracy thrillers first, with espionage and tactical action flowing through them. The pace is brisk, but the real hook is the idea of infiltration, the possibility that the system has been compromised for decades and ordinary life has only looked stable because the detonation point had not arrived yet.
