Steven Cooper Books in Order

Steven Cooper was born in Boston and raised in Massachusetts. Before most readers met him as a novelist, he spent years in television news, moving from job to job and reporting in New England, Arizona, and Florida. He covered crime and other hard stories, and that background still shows up in his fiction.

Newsrooms gave him good material.

Cooper worked as an investigative reporter, and the job did more than hand him plot ideas. It taught him how to ask better questions, how to listen for what people are not saying, and how to keep tugging at a thread when a story does not quite add up. Those habits, the endless follow-up question and the patience to let silence do its work, later became part of his fiction too. His journalism brought him multiple Emmy awards and nominations, a national Edward R. Murrow Award, and honors from the Associated Press.

He also taught writing in the English department at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, from 2007 to 2012. Along the way he worked as a freelance writer and video producer, and he has described those years of chasing stories around the country and overseas as a nomadic stretch of life. After years of moving for journalism jobs, he later said he had settled in Atlanta and was spending most of his time on fiction.

The move into crime fiction made sense. Cooper has said that one murder case he covered, involving a young lawyer whose death raised more questions than answers, stayed with him and helped push him toward fiction. Reporting and novel writing may look different from the outside, but for him they use much of the same toolbox: interviewing, observing, and following the truth even when the path gets messy.

His earlier novels included With You in Spirit and Deadline, books that already mixed mystery with a slightly uncanny streak. Many readers, though, start with Desert Remains, Dig Your Grave, and Valley of Shadows. Those books pair Phoenix detective Alex Mills with Gus Parker, a reluctant psychic whose visions are useful, frustrating, and never quite neat. The books are murder mysteries, but they also have room for humor, grief, friendship, and the odd way intuition can unsettle even the most practical people.

That pairing is the engine.

Readers who like Cooper tend to like the blend. The police work feels grounded, the Arizona setting is vivid, and the paranormal touch never overwhelms the mystery. Desert Remains drops Mills and Gus into a serial killer case tied to desert caves and ancient markings. Dig Your Grave moves the danger into Phoenix cemeteries and the wealthy neighborhoods around them. Valley of Shadows opens with a murdered socialite and a missing Dali painting, then folds in family secrets, art-world trouble, and higher personal stakes.

Place matters a lot in his books. Phoenix and the surrounding desert are not just backdrops. The heat, the open land, the old rock art, and the uneasy mix of beauty and menace all help shape the mood. He has also said he loves the desert and almost any beach, which tracks with how strongly landscape works in his fiction. His stories return again and again to buried histories, private grief, and the awkward ways ordinary people carry damage through daily life. Even when the plots get dark, there is usually some dry humor and a sharp ear for how people talk when they are hiding something. Cooper has said that journalism may have been his career, but fiction is where he most wants to be, and that feels believable on the page. His novels have a reporter's curiosity, a crime writer's sense of tension, and a real affection for people trying to make sense of a world that rarely gives them clean answers.
