Stephen Templin Books in Order

Stephen Templin was born in San Gabriel, California, and he has been drawn to two things for as long as he can remember, writing and military stories. As a kid he was already making up action plots, and by high school he was reading about the Vietnam War and the Navy SEALs. The goal to become a novelist showed up early, even if it took him a while to reach it.

After high school he joined the Navy with hopes of becoming a SEAL. He failed his first physical screen test, spent time training harder, then passed on a later try and went into BUD/S. Templin completed Hell Week, qualified as a pistol and rifle expert, and got deep enough into the pipeline to learn demolitions and small-unit tactics before deciding that the SEAL life was not where he was meant to stay.

That part of his life never stopped feeding the books.

When he left the Navy, he served as a missionary in Japan for two years, a move that shaped the next big stretch of his life. He studied at Brigham Young University, Hawaii, later earned advanced education degrees, and returned to Japan to teach at Meio University. For fourteen years he worked there as a tenured professor, helped shape English education programs, practiced aikido, and became fluent in Japanese. For a long time, most of his writing was academic rather than commercial.

The shift back toward books for general readers came through an old training connection. While on a research trip, Templin picked up Black Hawk Down in the Los Angeles airport, checked the index, and saw the name Howard Wasdin, a friend from BUD/S who had gone on to become a SEAL Team Six sniper. He was struck by how little of the SEAL side of that story had been told. Years later, he reached out to Wasdin, and that contact led to SEAL Team Six, the bestselling memoir they wrote together.

That book changed the scale of his writing career.

SEAL Team Six gave readers a grounded, inside-the-room look at training, sniper work, and the Battle of Mogadishu. It also led to the young readers version, I Am a SEAL Team Six Warrior, which brought the same story to teen readers in a more accessible form. Another nonfiction title, Navy Seal Training Class 144, turns the camera back on Templin himself, using his BUD/S journal to show the grind, fear, absurdity, and stubborn humor of training.

His fiction pulls from the same world but does something different with it. In the SEAL Team Six Outcasts books, he and Howard Wasdin build off-the-books missions around operators who do the jobs nobody wants to admit exist. In the Special Operations Group novels, beginning with Trident's First Gleaming, he widens the lens into globe-hopping black ops, spy work, cyber threats, and deniable missions. Readers who enjoy those books tend to like the mix of technical detail, fast pacing, and characters who are trying to do hard jobs without becoming machines.

A lot of his stories come back to the same pressures. Duty. Teamwork. Moral strain. Faith. The line between what a mission requires and what a person can live with afterward. Even when the plots move through Damascus, London, China, or the Mediterranean, there is usually a human problem under the hardware and tactics. That may be why a character like Chris Paladin, a former SEAL who becomes a pastor, feels so central to Templin's fiction. He is interested in action, but he is also interested in conscience.

Templin now lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. By his own account, the life he ended up with gave him room for family, teaching, and the writing dream that had been waiting on him since childhood.
