Author bio
Stephanie Perry Moore was born in Charleston, South Carolina, raised in Virginia, educated in Alabama, and has spent much of her adult life in Georgia. That Southern path matters in her work. Her books often feel rooted in real schools, real families, real church communities, and the everyday pressure of trying to do right when life keeps getting messy.
She started writing young. One of her early habits was making up her own episodes of The Cosby Show, which says a lot about where her imagination first lived, in character, family, and conversation. Later, as a reader, she went looking for Christian fiction that reflected Black teens and families in a way she recognized. When she did not find enough of it, she started writing the kind of books she wished had been on the shelf.
It took time to break through.
Her first novel, Flame, arrived in 1999. Soon after came the Payton Skky books, a series that has often been described as the first African-American Christian teen series. Those novels helped define what Moore would keep doing so well, writing stories about faith that do not float above real life, but move right through dating pressure, friendship drama, grief, temptation, school stress, and the hard work of growing up.
That range is one of the most interesting things about her career. She has written for younger readers in books like A+ Attitude and Making the Team, for middle grade readers in series such as Carmen Browne and Yasmin Peace, for teens in The Sharp Sisters and The Swoop List, and for adults in novels like Chasing Faith and Wearing My Halo Tilted. She has also written nonfiction and devotional material, including work connected to women-focused Bibles and devotionals.
Her stories are usually easy to enter. The language is direct, the stakes are clear, and the problems feel close to home. Readers come to her for girls and boys who are trying to figure out friendship, love, family, reputation, and faith without pretending they already have all the answers. Even when her books carry a strong spiritual message, they tend to stay grounded in the small choices that shape a day, a relationship, or a future.
She has also worked beyond books. Moore studied marketing at Auburn University, later earned a film certificate from Georgia Film Academy, and has done screenwriting study as well. She has been involved in television and film development, and her broader creative work helps explain why many of her stories move quickly and lean hard on scene, dialogue, and momentum.
She has also spent years speaking to young people in schools and community settings.
That part of her life fits the books. Moore writes like someone who cares about what readers are carrying, and who wants stories to meet them where they are. She has published more than eighty titles, sold more than a million copies, and often collaborates with her husband, Derrick Moore, a former NFL player. Together they have three children. Even across all those projects, the through line stays steady, stories about faith, family, and choice, told in a voice that aims to be honest, encouraging, and easy to hear.
