She is a preacher's daughter, the oldest child in her family, and a young woman trying to stay serious about her faith while dealing with dating, desire, peer pressure, and the move from high school into college.

That setup gives the series a little more intensity than some of Moore's other YA work. Laurel is not just asking whether something feels right in the moment. She is constantly measuring choices against what she says she believes, and against the example people expect from her. That can be exhausting, and the books do not pretend otherwise.

The series also spends time on freedom, self-worth, peace, and the tension of loving people who may be pulling you away from the life you want. Laurel is a useful character because she is earnest without being unreal. She wants to do right, but wanting is not the same as finding it easy. Her relationships complicate things. So does memory. So does loneliness. College does not suddenly make her more certain, it gives her new tests.
