Stéphanie Buelens was born in Belgium and educated in France. Her life and work have taken her far beyond either place: she has traveled to more than thirty countries and spent roughly two decades living between Paris and Los Angeles.

A second woman complicates the picture. Sloane Wilson is a former LAPD officer who now works outside the system as a fixer, or “sin eater,” handling problems that clients do not want brought to the police. Hired to deal with Claire, Sloane begins pulling at the stories Simon and Claire tell, and finds that neither one is simple.

The setup gives Buelens room to explore grief, suspicion, trauma, revenge, and the damage caused when someone is not believed. She keeps the pressure close to the characters instead of turning the story into a straightforward police investigation. Claire's fear may be justified, or it may be consuming her. Sloane has to decide what protecting a client really means when the facts refuse to line up.

It is a tense premise with no easy place to stand.

Readers looking for a compact, character-led thriller will find a story driven by shifting trust and a looming deadline. An Inconvenient Woman focuses less on solving a puzzle from a safe distance and more on the unease of not knowing whose account of events is true.
