Sten Books in Order

The Sten books are big, fast military science fiction, but they start in a very small place: a brutal factory world called Vulcan. Sten begins as a working-class kid with no power, no protection, and very little reason to trust anybody. That matters. Even after the story opens out into palace politics, covert missions, prison camps, and interstellar war, the series keeps its eye on what empire looks like from the bottom.

Sten's life changes when he is pulled out of that world and pushed into the service of the Eternal Emperor. From there he becomes a soldier, a covert operative, a bodyguard, a fleet officer, and, when necessary, a very reluctant diplomat. He moves through the machinery of power without ever quite belonging to it. That tension gives the series a lot of its bite.

He is not alone for long.

A big part of the fun is the cast around him, especially intelligence chief Ian Mahoney and the loud, dangerous, unforgettable Alex Kilgour. The books like banter, black humor, and last-minute solutions cooked up by people who are badly outnumbered. They also like throwing Sten into new corners of the universe. One book may feel like a pirate campaign, another like a court thriller, another like a war novel, and another like an espionage story in space.

Under all that movement, the series keeps asking the same basic questions. What holds an empire together? What happens when leaders become symbols instead of people? How much damage gets hidden behind order, ceremony, and official language? Bunch and Cole never stop the story to lecture, but the politics are there all the way through.

That mix is what gives Sten its staying power. The books are pulpy in the best sense, full of action, reversals, and sharp-edged set pieces, but they are also interested in class, loyalty, and the cost of obedience. Sten is good at surviving, good at fighting, and good at reading danger, yet he spends much of the series trying to figure out whether the system he serves deserves saving.

The titles on this page include both the original novels and later omnibus editions such as Battlecry, Juggernaut, and Death Match. If you are new to the series, the cleanest entry point is still the first novel, Sten. From there, the scope widens fast, but the point of view stays pleasingly grounded.
