Author bio

Chris Bunch was born in Fresno, California, on December 22, 1943, and grew up in California, later attending Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. He did not come to fiction by the neat, workshop route. Before he was known for science fiction and fantasy, he had already lived several other lives, and you can feel that mileage in his books.

He knew institutions from the inside.

Bunch served in the U.S. Army and spent fourteen months in Vietnam in 1965 and 1966, first as a patrol commander and later as a combat correspondent for Stars and Stripes. That experience mattered. Again and again, his fiction comes back to soldiers, chain of command, bad leadership, improvisation, and the hard gap between slogans and reality. Even when he was writing about galactic empires or dragon riders, the ground-level details usually came from someone who had seen how fear, loyalty, and exhaustion really work.

After the war, he wrote for the underground press, worked in journalism, and contributed to places like Rolling Stone. Then he moved into television. With his longtime friend Allan Cole, who later became his brother-in-law, he wrote for a string of network shows, including Magnum, P.I., Quincy, The A-Team, and Hunter. That TV background helps explain one of Bunch's most reliable strengths as a novelist: he knew how to keep a scene moving.

Then he and Cole turned hard toward novels.

Their best-known collaboration is the Sten series, which starts with Sten and grows into a big, fast military science fiction saga about a working-class kid who gets pulled into the machinery of empire. Readers still come to those books for the action, the dry humor, and the sense that the hero is never looking at power from a comfortable seat. The pair also wrote the fantasy sequence that begins with The Far Kingdoms, along with historical fiction such as A Reckoning for Kings.

On his own, Bunch kept writing stories with pressure in them. The Seer King trilogy turns on the uneasy bond between a soldier and a wizard, and on what happens when a promise of order starts to rot. The Last Legion books look at a crumbling interstellar empire from the edge of the map, where forgotten troops are left to do the work. In Star Risk, Ltd., he shifts gears into a looser mercenary adventure, built around bad jobs, worse odds, and people who keep going because quitting would be even more dangerous.

He also liked worlds where the fantastic came with mud on its boots. The Dragonmaster books give readers dragons, but they are also war novels about training, rank, capture, recovery, and the cost of survival. His Shadow Warrior novels carry that same mix of momentum and weariness. Bunch was very good at writing capable people under strain.

In the mid-1980s he left television behind and became a full-time novelist after roughly twenty years in that business. He later lived in Ilwaco, Washington, where he died on July 4, 2005, after a long lung illness. He was only sixty-one.

What lasts is the directness. Chris Bunch wrote adventure fiction, but he rarely forgot the people stuck inside the adventure.
