Stefan Gillespie Books in Order

The Stefan Gillespie books are historical crime novels set in Ireland and Europe from the mid 1930s into the final years of the Second World War. They begin in Dublin, but the story soon moves outward to places like Danzig, New York, Spain, London, Malta, Rome, and Berlin. Each book brings a murder or disappearance to solve, but the larger draw is the uneasy world around the case, where politics, religion, intelligence work, and private grief keep colliding.

Stefan is a Garda detective, later drawn deep into Special Branch work, and he is not the sort of hero who walks easily through his world. He is thoughtful, stubborn, and more decent than is always convenient. As a widowed father with family ties that do not fit neatly into the loud certainties of the time, he often sees things other people would rather ignore. That outsider quality gives the series much of its tension.

In the early novels, Stefan's investigations start with missing women, buried bodies, and local scandals, then widen into something far more dangerous. Hannah Rosen, especially in the opening books, gives him a sharp and emotionally complicated ally. The City of Shadows and The City of Strangers already show what the series does well, taking a case rooted in Irish life and following it across borders as Europe darkens. The books also build a strong personal thread around Stefan's home in Wicklow, the loss of his wife Maeve, and the people he keeps trying, and often failing, to protect.

Neutrality doesn't mean safety.

That idea runs through the whole series. Ireland may be officially outside the war, but Stefan keeps finding the war at his shoulder, in IRA schemes, British pressure, German espionage, church influence, black markets, and the half-truths told by governments on every side. The middle and later books lean even more into espionage and wartime politics, without losing the detective spine. Stefan is forever being sent somewhere awkward, sometimes secret, sometimes impossible, and then left to work out who is lying, who is frightened, and who is already beyond saving.

The war is always closer than it looks.

What makes these books stand out is the balance. They are atmospheric without getting bogged down, thoughtful without losing pace, and serious about the moral mess of the period without forgetting that readers came for a mystery. If you like historical crime that cares about character as much as plot, this series has a lot to offer. The books can be read one by one, but reading them in order gives the fullest view of Stefan's life and of a Europe sliding from tension into catastrophe.
