Series background & context

The Steele Guardians series has one of Susan Sleeman's clearest hooks: six Steele women, all with law enforcement experience, inherit a security business from their fathers and keep doing what they do best, protecting people and chasing the truth. That alone gives the books a slightly different flavor from her brother-team series.

These women know the work.

Because the leads have already spent years in law enforcement, the books open with capable characters who understand risk, evidence, interviews, and how quickly a case can turn bad. The new business lets them take on a wide range of assignments, from abductions and theft to smuggling and murder. That variety keeps the series lively while the shared family background ties everything together.

Another nice part of the setup is the built-in friction between professional skill and family loyalty. The Steeles are competent on their own, but they are also part of something inherited and still taking shape. They are figuring out how to run the business, how to trust partners, and how to protect the people around them without shutting everyone out.

The tone is still romantic suspense, so each book pairs a Steele woman with a man who brings his own training, history, or complications. Detectives, former cops, federal agents, and security professionals move through the series, and the cases give those pairings plenty of pressure to work under.

If you want a family-run security series where the women are already tough, already trained, and very much in charge of the investigation, this is a satisfying one. Start with Tough as Steele and then move through the sisters and partners in order.
