Series background & context
The First Responders series centers on a county Critical Incident Response team made up of law enforcement and emergency professionals who are trained to run toward the worst situations. The group includes detectives, bomb experts, search and rescue deputies, a paramedic, and a commander, all working from an old firehouse that doubles as home base and team gathering place.
That setup gives the series a strong shared-world feel.
These books lean into active danger. Bomb scares, shooters, kidnappings, sabotage, and holiday crises are all part of the job. The cases tend to start fast and stay fast, with the team thrown into tense, public emergencies that can turn deadly in seconds. Sleeman likes that ticking-clock pressure, and it works especially well here because the whole premise depends on people making good choices in terrible moments.
Even with all that action, the series still has room for community and camaraderie. The firehouse backdrop matters because it lets the team feel like more than coworkers. They watch out for one another, tease one another, and show up when things get messy. That warmth keeps the books from becoming too grim and gives the romantic storylines something solid to build on.
The Oregon setting adds to the atmosphere, especially when the team ends up in small towns, mountain areas, or places where local danger can spread quickly. The threats may start with one person, but they often widen into something that could hurt a whole crowd, a neighborhood, or a family.
If you want romantic suspense with emergency-response energy, a close team, and six connected books that move quickly, this is a good place to land. Start with Silent Night Standoff and keep going in order for the best sense of the squad.
