State of Reason is Maxwell's big, sprawling technothriller series. The core story starts in Loss of Reason, when a nuclear bomb devastates New York and two long-separated half brothers, Franklin Reveal and Everon Student, drop everything to find their sister Cynthia before the city and its fallout swallow her.

Franklin and Everon bring very different strengths to the job. Franklin is the reflective one, a man shaped by faith, people, and endurance. Everon is the pilot, builder, and practical fixer who can fly almost anything and keep moving when systems fail. Their search begins as a family rescue mission, but the books steadily widen it into a much larger story. Victoria becomes a major presence, and by the later novels the cast has grown into a network of allies, enemies, and people caught in the middle.

The blast is only the starting point.

What makes the series different from a straight disaster thriller is the way it splits its attention. Search for Reason keeps the emotional fallout close, but it also leans into damaged power grids, kidnappings, religious shock waves, and the question of who planned the attacks. Franklin is often pulled toward meaning, belief, and the human side of recovery. Everon keeps getting dragged toward machinery, infrastructure, and the hard fact that civilization still has to run, even after something unthinkable.

For all the talk of bombs and infrastructure, the books do not forget that the hook is personal. Cynthia is not a symbol. She is the reason Franklin and Everon keep moving, and that family bond gives the series its human center even when the plot spreads into national and international territory. It also leaves room for scenes of loyalty, recovery, and trust, which helps keep the larger machinery from taking over completely.

Drone shows another side of Maxwell's world. It is a shorter prequel-like thriller built around terrorism, a presidential election, and constitutional danger. The Haunted House is briefer still, following fifteen-year-old Phil Loonan, whose quick thinking after a horrifying event matters later in Finding Reason and Escape To Reason. By the time the main sequence reaches those later books, the story has opened up into public smears, hidden captors, larger conspiracies, and people with enough power to bend the truth.

That mix sets the tone for the whole series. These books move between ruined cityscapes, rescue work, churches, government pressure, technical problem-solving, and international threads. They are big on ideas, but they are not quiet or abstract. Expect cliffhangers, large casts, and long-running questions about freedom, technology, religion, and who gets to control the story after a national catastrophe.
