Naomi Soul is the leaner, more case-driven branch of Maxwell's thriller world. Instead of following one giant post-disaster arc, these books track investigations led by Naomi Soul, a former Olympic athlete and FBI Special Agent who is built for pressure and not easily rattled. She is sharp, physical, and willing to push hard when a case stops making sense.

Her first outing, Die By The Pen, throws her and partner Xue Sang into a nasty puzzle. Famous authors are being murdered using methods from their own books. The killings jump across Florida, the crime scenes do not match neatly, and the case gets stranger when libraries start burning. That setup tells you a lot about the series. Maxwell likes unusual murder mechanics, high-concept motives, and investigators who have to think sideways rather than just chase the obvious suspect.

Naomi does not get easy cases.

In Vibrate, the danger shifts from public crime scenes to private wealth. New York City billionaires begin dying in baffling ways, and Naomi teams up with Chloe Brown to work out whether the victims are succumbing to disease, being assassinated, or falling to something even harder to name. Older victims survive while younger ones die. Some of the people collapsing were in excellent health. That uncertainty gives the series its edge. Naomi is not only trying to stop a killer, she is trying to prove there is a killer at all.

The tone here is less about survival after catastrophe and more about investigation under pressure. There is still a strong technothriller streak, and the books like to flirt with ideas that feel one step past ordinary police procedure. At the same time, Naomi stays grounded as a working investigator. She reads rooms, follows patterns, and keeps moving when the evidence turns bizarre. If you like mysteries that begin with a clear body on the floor and then veer into something larger, this series has that gear.

It also connects back to Maxwell's broader State of Reason universe. Naomi is not sealed off in her own corner, and readers who go deeper into the bibliography will notice that her work touches larger conspiracies in the background. Even so, the Naomi Soul books are easy to approach on their own. Start with Die By The Pen, then move to Vibrate for the stranger, more speculative follow-up. Expect fast plotting, unusual threats, and a lead who keeps asking hard questions when everyone else wants a simpler answer.
