Starship Seasons Books in Order

The Starship Seasons books are Eric Brown at his quieter and more personal. They take place on Chalcedony, a backwater colony world in the Telemass future, where the beachside town of Magenta Bay seems at first like a place to escape the noise of bigger human worlds.

David Conway comes there after the death of his daughter and the collapse of his marriage. He wants peace, not a fresh crisis. Instead, he finds a small circle of friends, a derelict starship, alien mysteries, and evidence that the calm surface of Chalcedony is hiding much older conflicts.

Magenta Bay becomes home.

Starship Summer introduces David's new life and the people around him, including artist Matt Sommers, beachcomber Maddie Chamberlain, and former pilot Hawksworth. A haunting connected to David's abandoned ship draws the group into events that are much larger than their isolated community.

The later novellas, Starship Fall, Starship Winter, and Starship Spring, continue to follow the same community through different seasons and different forms of disruption. A visiting holo star, an empathic celebrity, local rituals, relationships, and old resentments all bring pressure to bear. The separate stories gradually form a fuller picture of David, his friends, and the alien forces circling their world.

These are not military space opera books, even though the wider setting contains starships and ancient interstellar tensions. Brown calls them quiet science fiction, and that is a useful guide. The stakes can become serious, but the series spends time with friendship, grief, creativity, love, and the small decisions that make a life feel worth staying for.

The seasons in the titles are more than decoration. They suggest change, recurrence, and the way people return to old hurts with slightly different knowledge. David begins as someone trying to get away from pain. His life on Chalcedony does not erase that pain, but it gives him people and responsibilities that make a future possible.
