Author bio

Stacy Gregg was born in Melbourne and grew up in Ngāruawāhia, in New Zealand's Waikato. Horses were there early, and so were books. She has said that as a girl she wanted two things at once, to ride and to write, which turns out to be a pretty good summary of the career she eventually built.

Writing came first. She filled school exercise books with poems and short stories, then moved into journalism as an adult. Before fiction took over, she wrote features for magazines and newspapers and became well known as a fashion writer, a job that was quick, stylish and very far from muddy pony-club paddocks.

That double passion never really left.

Her turning point came when Mystic and the Midnight Ride was picked up for publication in 2007. That book introduced Issie Brown and launched the Pony Club Secrets adventures, a long-running set of horse stories full of friendship, rivalry, competitions, missing ponies and the odd shiver of mystery. Readers often remember those books for how lived-in the horse world feels. The riding matters, the stable work matters, and the bond between girl and horse is always the heart of it. Those stories later inspired the television series Mystic.

Gregg kept widening the field. The Pony Club Rivals books shifted into elite riding-school drama, with more pressure, more social tension and more competitive sparkle. Her younger Spellbound Ponies stories went in a gentler direction, pairing Olivia and Eliza with magically trapped ponies and shorter adventures aimed at newer readers. Across all of them, she writes animals as real personalities, not just scenery.

Then the stories got bigger.

In standalones like The Princess and the Foal, The Island of Lost Horses, The Girl Who Rode the Wind, The Thunderbolt Pony, The Fire Stallion and Prince of Ponies, she moved beyond local pony-club life into Jordan, tropical islands, wartime Europe, Iceland and earthquake-hit New Zealand. Some of these books draw on real people or real events, and many use dual timelines or a historical thread. What readers tend to like is the mix: there is always adventure, but there is also grief, family history, rescue work, moral choice and a horse at the centre of the storm. Gregg has said she likes to visit the places she writes about, and that sense of place shows up strongly in the landscapes, weather and riding scenes.

She is also Māori, with whakapapa to Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Pukeko and Ngāti Maru Hauraki, and in recent years her work has widened beyond horse fiction. Her novel Nine Girls, which draws on her upbringing in Ngāruawāhia, marked a more personal turn in her writing. These days she lives in Auckland with her daughter and a very full animal household, and she still rides. After all the years, the two things she wanted as a child, stories and horses, are still right at the centre of her life.
