Gregg Loomis Books in Order

Gregg Loomis was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 8, 1938, and grew up in Ansley Park with his sister Louise, much of the time in the care of their maternal grandparents. Long before he became known for international thrillers, he was already building the kind of resume that sounds like it belongs to one of his own heroes, full of movement, risk, and stories worth retelling.

He studied at Emory University and Emory School of Law, then built a long legal career in Atlanta focused on commercial litigation. That background mattered later. His novels may move at thriller speed, but there is usually a practical mind behind the action, someone thinking about leverage, institutional self-protection, and what people in power will do when their secrets are threatened.

Loomis did not seem especially interested in staying in one lane.

He raced sports cars professionally from 1967 to 1974, even competing against Mario Andretti at Daytona, and he also flew as a licensed commercial pilot. Travel became a big part of his life too, especially in Europe and the Caribbean. You can feel all of that in the books. They move quickly, they like machinery and momentum, and they are rarely content to stay in one city when they can send a character across borders instead.

His first novel, Voodoo Fury, arrived in 1991. After that came a long pause in book publishing, but not a quiet one. He kept working, traveling, and writing, including articles for Flying and Scuba Diving magazines, while gathering the kinds of details that later fed his fiction. When he returned to novels, it felt less like a debut than a second act from someone who had already lived a lot.

Then The Pegasus Secret appeared in 2005, and everything clicked.

That book introduced Lang Reilly, the former intelligence man turned lawyer who became Loomis's best-known character. In books like The Julian Secret, The Sinai Secret, The Coptic Secret, and The Bonaparte Secret, Loomis mixed murders, secret societies, church history, lost documents, and fast travel across Europe and the Middle East. Readers who click with him usually come for that blend of historical puzzle and straight-ahead thriller momentum. The books ask big questions, but they never forget to keep moving.

He also wrote the Jason Peters novels, beginning with Gates of Hades and continuing with Hot Ice and The First Casualty. Those books lean harder into covert operations and military action. Jason works for NARCOM, a private outfit that takes on jobs official agencies cannot easily touch, which gave Loomis another way to write about danger, secrecy, and global stakes. The history is still there, but the tone is tougher and more tactical.

Across both series, Loomis kept returning to a few favorite ingredients: old secrets, modern power struggles, international settings, and protagonists who can think their way through a puzzle and fight their way out of a trap. His law background, flying experience, racing years, and love of travel all seem to feed that mix. Even when the plots get wild, there is usually a sense that the author knows how real people move through the world.

His novels were translated into multiple languages, and more than half a million copies went into print. He was also nominated by the Georgia Writers Association for Writer of the Year, Fiction. Loomis spent most of his adult life in Atlanta, where he practiced law for decades and lived with his wife Suzanne. Family remembrances describe him as funny, curious, and full of stories. He died in July 2025.
