Series background & context

Souls of the Road takes Devon Monk's love of magic and found family out onto the open highway. Instead of one fixed town, this series moves along Route 66, where diners, motels, ghost towns, and roadside stops become part of a much larger magical map. It has the feel of a road novel, but with gods, monsters, curses, and old bargains riding shotgun.

At the heart of it are Lula and Brogan Gauge.

They have been together for decades, and they have paid dearly for it. Brogan is an earthbound spirit, trapped on the road instead of properly dead. Lula is only half-alive, caught in a state that leaves her neither fully human nor fully monstrous. Their relationship is the center of the series. They want what a lot of fantasy couples want, a future, freedom, a life they can actually share, but every step toward that goal pulls them deeper into dangerous magic.

The first books set up the big hook clearly. Lula and Brogan are trying to break their curse, and that means chasing rumors, journals, deals with gods, and bits of knowledge scattered across the country. Later books widen the scope. Their path tangles with Cupid, ancient powers, hostile monsters, and a spell book so powerful it could change the world for the worse. The road keeps opening, and so do the stakes.

What makes the series work is the combination of movement and mood. Route 66 is not just background decoration. The old highway gives the books a haunted, worn-in feeling, full of places that seem like they are holding onto stories. Monk uses that setting well. One stop might bring werewolves, another ghosts, another a bargain you should absolutely not accept from a god. The world feels big, but the emotional focus stays close to Lula and Brogan.

It is romantic, but not soft around the edges.

There is a lot of yearning in these books, and a lot of determination. Lula and Brogan love each other deeply, but love does not erase the practical problems in front of them. They still have to fight, choose, survive, and keep moving when the next town offers one more clue and one more disaster. Monk also threads in humor and warmth, plus the sense that the people and creatures they meet along the way can become allies, enemies, or both.

If you want fantasy that feels part road trip, part ghost story, part romance, and part supernatural hunt, Souls of the Road is a strong place to start.
