Broken Magic is Devon Monk's darker Portland spin-off, the place where the fallout from the Allie Beckstrom world gets pushed to the front. Magic has changed. Shame and Terric move through that world half as investigators, half as walking disasters. Their partnership gives the series its bite. They argue, needle each other, drag each other toward better choices, and keep showing up when it matters.

It is a grim world, but not a humorless one.

Monk writes these books with real speed. The action is rough, the magic is volatile, and the banter keeps the story from collapsing under its own darkness. There is also a lot of heart in the series, especially in the question of who counts as family when the institutions around you are failing.
