What works here is the blend. Harper borrows some pleasures from school fantasy, secret heritage stories, and light period worldbuilding, then keeps the tone readable and brisk. There are gowns, lessons, whispered alliances, and magical disasters, but there is also a very practical heroine who keeps noticing how unfair the whole system is.

Friendship matters as much as romance here, maybe more. So does the question of chosen identity. The series keeps asking who gets to belong, who gets educated, and who benefits from keeping the old social order in place. That gives the books a little more bite than their sparkling surface first suggests.
