That setup matters. In these books, Brill is not a detached investigator with nothing to lose. She is a police chief, wife, mother, and wounded believer all at once. Herman uses that split pressure well. Brill can read a crime scene, but she has a much harder time facing what bitterness is doing inside her own family.

Home life is never off duty.

In The Real Enemy, Brill has barely unpacked before people start disappearing and the town begins talking about the local legend of the red shadows, spirits tied to Cherokee history. That gives the first book a strong sense of place and mood. Sophie Trace is a small East Tennessee town, and Herman lets local fear, rumor, and folklore shape the investigation without losing sight of the real human threat behind it.

The Last Word tightens the pressure by making the danger more personal. An ex-con with an old grudge starts circling Brill, while her daughter Vanessa comes home from college with life-changing news. Herman weaves those two threads together so the book works both as a crime story and as a family story about disappointment, fear, and the struggle to respond with grace when life goes off script.

The trilogy closes with The Right Call, which shifts some of the focus to Ethan Langley as he tries to rebuild trust with Vanessa and protect the people he loves. By that point, the series has built a strong supporting cast around Brill, including Kurt, Vanessa, and baby Carter. Readers who like family continuity inside suspense will find a lot to enjoy here, and some of those characters carry forward into the Roux River Bayou books.

What sets Sophie Trace apart is the balance. These are genuine suspense novels, full of disappearances, threats, and murder investigations, but they are also interested in marriage, parenthood, and the damage people do to one another long before a crime begins. If you want Kathy Herman at her most procedural, start with The Real Enemy. If you read all three in order, Brill's emotional arc lands much harder.
