Snap Malek Mystery Books in Order

The Snap Malek books follow Steve 'Snap' Malek, a Chicago Tribune police reporter who has a habit of pushing well past the edge of his assignment. He is curious, stubborn, and not especially good at leaving dangerous things alone. His nickname comes from the snap-brim hats he always wears, which tells you something about the series right away: these books care about period detail, but they never get fussy about it. They want to put you on the street with him.

Goldsborough sets the series between 1938 and 1949, which means Snap moves through a city shaped by the Depression, war, postwar unease, and rapid change. Because Goldsborough spent years in journalism himself, the newspaper side feels especially lived in. You get editors, cops, press rooms, grudges, deadlines, and the constant sense that the next phone call might open a story or blow one apart. Snap is not a private eye who can pick and choose his cases. He is a working reporter, which gives the books a nice extra layer of pressure.

The historical backdrop is one of the big pleasures here. Three Strikes You're Dead folds murder into the Chicago Cubs' 1938 pennant race. Shadow of the Bomb moves into wartime intrigue around Enrico Fermi's work at the University of Chicago. A Death in Pilsen uses a postwar neighborhood and a family murder to show a different side of the city. A President in Peril builds around Harry Truman's 1948 campaign stop in Chicago, and Terror at the Fair turns the Chicago Railroad Fair into a hunting ground for a killer.

Snap also brushes up against real public figures, including Al Capone, Helen Hayes, Dizzy Dean, Frank Lloyd Wright, Preston Tucker, Walt Disney, and Truman himself. That could feel gimmicky in the wrong hands, but Goldsborough keeps it grounded. These people usually deepen the setting rather than take it over. The real center is always Snap, chasing facts through neighborhoods, saloons, public events, and political trouble while trying to stay ahead of both the police and his own editors.

Snap rarely stays where he's told.

This series has more continuity than the Nero Wolfe books, so it makes sense to read it in order. You can watch Snap age, settle into his work, and carry the effects of earlier cases with him. Later, Goldsborough returned to the character in Stairway to Nowhere, a Snap Malek reader built around a novella and shorter stories. If you like historical mysteries with newsroom energy, strong local color, and a lead who solves problems by asking the next sharp question, this is a very easy series to sink into.
