The Sleepwalker

by Chris Bohjalian

2017

When Annalee Ahlberg disappears from her Vermont home, her daughter Lianna starts pulling at threads the family has ignored for years. What begins as a missing-person case becomes a dark, intimate mystery.

Series background & context

The Sleepwalker / Ahlberg books are a small, eerie branch of Chris Bohjalian's work, part domestic suspense, part family mystery. The thread running through them is the Ahlberg family in rural Vermont, especially Lianna Ahlberg, who grows up around her mother's unsettling sleepwalking and the quiet strain it puts on their home.

The Premonition works like a doorway into that world. Lianna is seventeen, the summer air is heavy, a thunderstorm snaps a power line, horses die in a field, and the whole town feels slightly off balance. Annalee Ahlberg is already leaving her bed at night and moving through the dark in ways her daughters can neither predict nor control. The story is brief, but it does exactly what a good prequel should do: it builds mood, plants unease, and makes you feel that something bad is already on its way.

Nothing here feels loud, and that is the point.

By the time The Sleepwalker begins, the unease has become a full crisis. Annalee disappears from her bed, and what first looks like a frightening medical problem starts to resemble a missing-person case, then a family reckoning. Lianna is older now and forced into the role of daughter, caretaker, and investigator all at once, while her younger sister Paige, their father Warren, and detective Gavin Rikert each pull the mystery in different directions.

Lianna is the emotional anchor of these books. She is smart, bruised, sometimes impulsive, and not always sure whether she is protecting her family or finally learning how little she understands it. One of the pleasures of the Ahlberg story is watching her move from anxious daughter to someone willing to ask harder questions, even when the answers may damage what is left of home.

What makes this series work is that the central puzzle is never only about what happened on one night. Bohjalian is just as interested in private family habits, buried desire, sibling loyalty, memory, shame, and the stories people tell themselves so they can keep living together. Parasomnia gives the books their hook, but the real tension comes from secrets, grief, and the terrible possibility that love has not made anyone fully honest.

It is mystery fiction, but it reads with the intimacy of family drama.

Expect a moody Vermont setting, woods and rivers and old houses, plus a slow build of danger rather than nonstop action. The Premonition adds atmosphere and backstory, but The Sleepwalker is the main event, a twisty, character-driven novel that keeps its focus on the people at the center of the loss. If you like suspense that stays close to character and lets dread gather by inches, this is a strong place to start.
