Series background & context

Sisters & Friends is a connected Amish romance series about the three Esh sisters, Lydia, Emma, and Rachel. Their stories are set against the pressures of family loyalty, faith, secrets, and the difficult choices that come when love points in an unexpected direction.

Change of Heart begins with Lydia, the oldest Esh sister. She feels responsible for keeping sixteen-year-old Emma out of trouble during Rumspringa, a time when Amish young people may explore life beyond their community before deciding whether to join the church. Lydia joins forces with Caleb, the brother of Emma's English boyfriend, hoping to separate the teenagers. Instead, their plan brings Lydia and Caleb closer, leaving her to question what she wants and what her faith requires.

Being the responsible sister is not simple.

Three years later, Buried Secrets turns to Emma. Recovering after a serious accident, she struggles with missing memories and moves to a new town to help Lydia, who is expecting twins. A friendship with neighbor Samuel begins to grow, but a family revelation threatens to upend the life Emma is trying to rebuild.

The final book, Gift from Above, follows the youngest sister, Rachel. She has feelings for her sister's boyfriend when an airplane crashes in the Esh family's fields. The injured English pilot asks Rachel to keep his location secret, and as she helps him recover, she faces another test of her heart and her place in the community.

The series has more family tension than a simple courtship tale. Each sister has a different burden, and the books show how one person's choices can affect siblings, parents, and friends. The romances are gentle, but there is real uncertainty around memory, responsibility, trust, and belonging.

Read the books in order. The sisters' lives overlap, and the later novels work best when readers already know the earlier family history. Start with Change of Heart, then continue to Buried Secrets and Gift from Above.
