Claire Booth's Sheriff Hank Worth books are small-town police procedurals with plenty of local texture. Hank is a newly appointed sheriff working in and around Branson, Missouri, after moving down from Kansas City with his family to help his widowed father-in-law. He takes the job seriously, but the job keeps refusing to stay simple. Every call seems to carry a second problem behind it.

Later books keep raising the pressure without losing the grounded feel. In Dangerous Consequences, sick tourists, a department revolt, and a murder case collide. Home Fires opens with a fireworks warehouse explosion and then sends Hank into troubling questions about the morgue and the past. Throwing Shadows mixes buried bodies, local legend, and a rush of treasure hunters near Murder Rocks. Booth likes big events, but she uses them to expose the smaller frictions underneath, family strain, deputy rivalries, budget fights, and old resentments that never really went away.

Sheila Turley is a big part of that ongoing texture. So is Hank's home life, including his marriage to Dr. Maggie McCleary and the obligations that come with living in a place where work and private life never stay neatly separated. The series pays close attention to what policing looks like when the sheriff knows the victims, the suspects, or their cousins. Choices echo. So do mistakes.

These books are not all gloom.

Booth has said she never wanted Hank's world to become a string of super-dark serial killer stories, and you can feel that in the tone. The stakes are real, sometimes painful, but the series leaves room for dry humor, decent people under stress, and the everyday awkwardness of public service. Each mystery stands on its own, but reading in order lets you watch the department, the town, and Hank himself change over time.
