Series background & context
The Shear Disaster books take Terri Reid's paranormal instincts and drop them into a Southern cozy mystery setup. The series begins when L.J. Carter, short for Louella Jo, returns from New York to her hometown of Julep, Mississippi, for her mother's funeral. That homecoming does not stay simple for long. Very quickly, L.J. learns there is good reason to question how her mother died, and the local beauty salon she inherits turns out to be a better source of town secrets than any police file.
That salon is the engine of the series.
Julep is the kind of place where everybody knows everybody, at least in theory, and where gossip travels faster than facts. Reid uses that to great effect. Customers talk. Families have history. Old loyalties still matter. And one careless remark can open up a whole new line of danger. The books have a strong cozy feel because of that small-town web, but they also keep one foot in the paranormal. Ghosts are not just background decoration here. L.J.'s mother does not stay entirely silent, and the dead have a way of complicating what the living think they know.
L.J. is easy to root for because she is both capable and thrown badly off balance. She is grieving, trying to decide what home means now, and figuring out whether she wants this new life she has stumbled into. Around her is a cast that gives the series its flavor, close friends, possible romance, strong personalities, and townspeople who can be helpful, nosy, or dangerous, sometimes in the same scene.
The tone stays lively. There is humor, Southern warmth, plenty of personality, and enough emotional weight to keep the murders from feeling disposable. If you like small-town mysteries where the setting is almost a character, and where a hair salon can be the center of both community life and trouble, this series is a fun place to start. Begin with BlowOut and read forward so the town secrets and character relationships have room to build.
