Series background & context

Mary O'Reilly is the heart of Terri Reid's best-known fiction, and the setup is simple enough to hook you fast. Mary used to be a Chicago cop. Then she was shot, had a near-death experience, and came back changed. She can now see and speak to ghosts, which would be hard enough on its own, but the dead rarely show up just to say hello. They want help.

So Mary starts over in Freeport, Illinois, working as a private investigator and trying to build a life that makes sense again.

That blend is what gives the series its shape. On one side, these are paranormal mysteries, with ghosts, old crimes, lingering secrets, and victims who cannot rest. On the other, they are small-town investigations where Mary still has to do real detective work. A ghost can point her in the right direction, but a ghost cannot testify in court. Mary has to find evidence, talk to the living, and survive long enough to put the pieces together.

Freeport matters a lot here. Reid writes it as a place of neighborhoods, family ties, local politics, old houses, and long memories. Cases often begin with a haunting, but they usually open into something more human, grief, guilt, greed, abuse, betrayal, or the quiet damage people carry for years. That keeps the books grounded even when something supernatural is happening in the room.

Mary does not work alone for long. Police Chief Bradley Alden becomes one of the central relationships in the series, and over time the books widen to include family, friends, children, and recurring local figures readers get attached to. That continuing cast is a big part of the appeal. The mysteries matter, but so does the feeling of returning to people you know.

It is spooky, but it is never mean.

If you like paranormal mysteries with a cozy edge, an ongoing family story, and a heroine who is practical even when the dead are talking to her, this series has a very easy rhythm to fall into. Start with Loose Ends and go in order. The relationships build, the town deepens, and the later books land better when you have watched Mary make this odd, haunted life her own.
