Shark Wars Books in Order

Shark Wars starts with a strong middle grade adventure hook, except the kids are sharks. Gray has been raised in Coral Shiver, but he is bigger, hungrier, and harder to explain than anyone around him. When trouble gets him banished, he leaves home with Barkley, his smaller and much more cautious best friend. That exile pushes both of them into the wider ocean, and that is where the series really opens up.

The larger setting is the Big Blue, a version of the ocean shaped by clans called shivers, old rules, contested hunting grounds, and a lot of fear about what comes next. Food is getting harder to find, old balances are breaking down, and power hungry sharks are ready to use the chaos. Reefs, open water, ruins, and deeper territories all matter, so the setting never feels like a blank stretch of sea.

Nobody gets to stay safe for long.

As Gray and Barkley travel farther from home, they run into rival shivers, uneasy allies, and mentors who may be hiding as much as they reveal. One of the key figures is Takiza, a mysterious betta fish who trains Gray and tries to prepare him for much bigger fights ahead. Gray is not just learning how to survive. He is also trying to understand his missing family, his strange size and hunger, and why old legends about megalodons seem to keep circling back to him.

By The Battle of Riptide, Into the Abyss, and Kingdom of the Deep, the books have grown from an exile story into a much larger war story. The threats get bigger, but so does the mythology. Emperors, rebellions, hidden histories, and ancient predators all become part of the arc, and later books like Enemy of Oceans and The Last Emprex keep widening the stakes without losing track of Gray's personal struggle.

The tone stays squarely middle grade. There are real dangers and plenty of fights, but the books keep the focus on loyalty, courage, and tough choices instead of grim detail. Altbacker writes the action clearly, and each novel tends to end by opening a door to the next stage of the story. That makes the whole sequence feel less like six separate adventures and more like one long underwater campaign.

Barkley matters, too.

He brings humor, loyalty, and a useful bit of stealth to a series that could otherwise get very heavy. That balance is a big part of what makes Shark Wars work. The books are fast, visual, and full of action, but they are also about friendship, trust, leadership, and the uncomfortable feeling of growing into a role you never asked for. If you like animal fantasy with battles, politics, and a clear through line from one book to the next, this series is best read in order.
