Author bio

Shannon Work grew up in Del Rio, a Texas border town, where summers meant time on her grandparents’ ranch. That West Texas grounding stayed with her. Years later, the region would become one of the landscapes she returns to in her mysteries, alongside Colorado’s high country.

After high school, Work moved to College Station to attend Texas A&M University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in land economics. At A&M, she met the man she would marry, an offensive lineman who helped turn her into a serious football fan.

Before publishing fiction, she spent most of her working life in real-estate development. One of her developments received a national Best in America Living Award. Her move from real estate into mystery writing gave her a new way to use the places and communities she knows, especially the polished resort towns and wide-open country that can look peaceful from a distance.

Her Mountain Resort Mystery series began with Now I See You in 2020. The book follows Denver television anchor Georgia Glass, who heads to Aspen while trying to escape an obsessed fan and instead finds herself drawn into a murder case. It sets the pattern for Work’s books: striking Western settings, suspicious deaths, and everyday people forced to keep asking uncomfortable questions.

The series then turns to detective Jack Martin in Everything To Lose, a Vail-set case involving a widow accused of killing her husband. Jack remains at the center of The Killing Storm, Murder in the San Juans, Death in a Harsh Land, and Echoes in the Dark. His investigations lead through snowstorms, isolated homes, ranch country, old grudges, and the kinds of secrets people work hard to keep.

The scenery is never just scenery.

Aspen, Vail, Telluride, and the San Juan Mountains bring beauty and practical danger to these stories, while Death in a Harsh Land takes Jack back to West Texas. Work writes traditional, clue-driven mysteries, but she gives the crimes room to touch families, local history, money, and trust. The result is a series built around whodunits with a strong sense of place.

She also clearly enjoys the craft of putting a mystery together. In writing about her process, Work has described working from an outline while leaving room to discover the story as she goes. Her reading tastes include Mary Higgins Clark and Larry McMurtry, a combination that makes sense beside her own mix of suspense, Western landscapes, and close-knit communities.

These are books for readers who like a case to solve, a setting they can picture, and danger that grows one clue at a time.

Away from the page, Work divides her time between Houston and Telluride with her husband and their three rescue dogs. She reads, skis, hikes in the mountains near Telluride, and follows Texas A&M sports, along with the Astros, Spurs, and Broncos. Those two home bases, Texas and Colorado, are also the map behind much of her fiction.
