Series background & context
The Mountain Resort Mystery series begins in Now I See You, when Denver television anchor Georgia Glass heads to Aspen hoping to get away from an obsessed fan. An unexpected inheritance, a Victorian house, and the frozen body of a missing heiress put her reporting skills to work. It is a classic setup: a glamorous mountain town, a closed circle of possible suspects, and a danger that follows Georgia too closely.
From Everything To Lose onward, the series centers on detective Jack Martin. His cases take him from Vail to Telluride and the surrounding San Juan Mountains, where private estates, ranches, historic properties, and resort life form the backdrop to murder investigations. In Death in a Harsh Land, the map widens to West Texas, calling Jack back toward a place that carries personal weight.
The views are spectacular, but no one gets to relax for long.
Each book brings a new case rather than one mystery stretched across the whole series. A dead spouse, a missing author, a destroyed plane, human remains found on a ranch, and a body in an abandoned mine all give Jack different problems to untangle. The questions tend to reach beyond the crime itself: who stands to gain, which old loyalties still matter, and what people will do to keep money, history, or family business hidden.
The books are traditional whodunits with a suspenseful edge. Work uses snow, distance, storms, steep terrain, and small-town connections as real obstacles, not just pretty scenery. Jack must read people as carefully as physical clues, especially when witnesses know one another and trust is in short supply. The tone is brisk and accessible, with enough threat to keep the investigations moving.
Readers can begin at Now I See You to meet the series in publication order and start with Georgia’s Aspen story. Those most interested in Jack can move to Everything To Lose, then follow his cases in order. The early books introduce different leads, but the shared appeal is the same: murder mysteries shaped by Colorado mountain country and, later, the tougher terrain of West Texas. Expect a fresh suspect list, a strong local setting, and a case that keeps narrowing until the truth has to come out.
