Author bio
Shannon McKenna grew up deep in the mountains of Oregon, in a remote canyon with no TV reception. What felt like deprivation at the time turned into a serious reading life. She read widely, and once romance got its hooks into her, that was that.
Books got there first.
She studied English at Yale, then landed in the very practical post-college world of temp jobs in Manhattan. At the same time, she was chasing a much less practical dream, trying to build a life in music. She sang medieval and Renaissance music with ensembles, did cabaret and church gigs, and took the kinds of jobs that keep the rent paid, including weddings, funerals, and even Christmas carols in malls.
Writing started in secret. While working office jobs in New York, she kept a respectable spreadsheet on one screen and her manuscript on another, switching fast when a boss walked by. She has said that those stolen scraps of time taught her two things at once: every little bit helps, and sometimes little bits still are not enough.
Italy changed the equation.
After meeting the man who became her husband at a Renaissance Faire, she eventually took a leap and moved to southern Italy. With no job, little Italian, and long quiet days stretching out in front of her, she finally had the space to finish a romance manuscript she had been circling for years. Kensington bought that early work, and after several category romances she broke out in a bigger way with Behind Closed Doors, the book that opened her McCloud world.
That series still gives a good sense of what readers come to her for. Books like Standing in the Shadows, Out Of Control, and Edge of Midnight mix family loyalty, dangerous secrets, and a lot of emotional heat. Later series took those same instincts in new directions. Right Through Me and the Obsidian books lean into science-tinged suspense. Hellion heads into darker small-town danger. His Perfect Fake Engagement shows she can also have fun with glossy contemporary setups, fake relationships, and sharp, sexy banter.
Her heroes tend to be intense, protective, and a little battered. Her heroines are rarely passive for long. Across the books, you see recurring McKenna interests again and again: survivalist streaks, off-grid or isolated places, hidden identities, family damage, and people who have every reason not to trust each other but do it anyway. Even when the setup gets wild, the emotional engine is usually simple. Two smart, stubborn people are under pressure, and love becomes one more risk they have to decide whether to take.
She has also said that the people she knew growing up in the mountains, misfits, survivalists, and off-grid individualists, fed directly into the kinds of men and worlds she writes. That tracks. Even her billionaire and tech-world stories are less about luxury for its own sake than about power, danger, and what people will do to protect the few people they love.
These days she still lives in Italy with her husband, and she still talks fondly about the singing life she had before writing took over. In her perfect world, she has said, she would do both. That mix of romance, risk, and wholehearted commitment feels very much like the books she writes.
