Series background & context

The Shadows of Love series is built around celebrations and escapes that go very wrong. These are psychological thrillers about regular people caught in dangerous situations while far from their usual routines. A beach trip, a wedding weekend, a resort, or a storm should offer a break from real life. In these books, those places become pressure cookers.

The danger is rarely simple.

Love Her Darkly begins with college student Ellie Levine on spring break at a Florida motel. She expects sun, friends, and a little freedom from her strict parents. Instead, a murder nearby, armed outlaws, and a night-time abduction pull her into a fight to survive. The story follows several people whose lives collide as the violence moves closer.

Kiss of Death shifts to Kaitlyn and Logan's wedding weekend. A hurricane that was supposed to pass far away arrives with rising water and chaos, while a killer uses the storm as cover. Guests are trapped, routes to safety disappear, and the happy occasion becomes a desperate test of who can stay calm and who can be trusted.

The series uses wide casts rather than one continuing detective. That means the tension comes from competing viewpoints, private fears, fragile relationships, and incomplete information. Some characters are hiding things. Some are simply overwhelmed. Some make choices that look sensible until the situation changes again. The threat outside the room matters, but the shifting dynamics inside the group are just as important.

Settings are central to the mood. Beaches and tourist spots can feel open and carefree, but isolation turns them into traps when the police are far away, weather cuts off roads, or danger is moving through the same halls and rooms as the characters. The books lean into the awkward social expectations of romance, parties, and family gatherings, then show how quickly those rules fall apart under real fear.

The tone is dark, quick, and tense, with violence and emotional fallout rather than a traditional clue-by-clue procedural. The books connect through their approach to disaster, not through a single lead character or an ongoing mystery. You can read each one as a standalone. Start with Love Her Darkly for a Florida-set survival thriller, then pick up Kiss of Death for a storm-bound wedding nightmare.
